Artist of the Month: J West

Back to blog

Hi Jon! What inspires your work as an artist?
I have a habit of being inspired easily; many of my paintings have been created through a moment of spontaneity. I have been inspired to act upon my impulse to create from artists I admire such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Choe and Vincent Van Gogh.

Vibrant colours and patterns in wildlife seem to have become the muse to my creativity.  A simple flick through an animal magazine can get the mind going, I can't quite finish turning a few pages without wanting to pick up a paintbrush.

What medium do you like working with best, and why?
I enjoy sketching and have started to use oils recently but the majority of the time I tend to use acrylic. I like how fast it dries and the thick destiny it can bring to each paint stroke

How long have you been an artist for?
I started two years ago and have been on a roll every since. I am self-taught having never painted before and I am enjoying every moment of it, each piece I seem to improve. The public response has been amazing and keeps me going.

What do you like best about having your work with us at SOTA?
Other than working with the charismatic and charming Arts coordinator Hannah-Jane, I would have to say it is the thrill of being involved with such an innovative company that has found an exciting approach towards art and food. The whole restaurant is a work of art, from the chairs to the cutlery. I could not recommend it enough to my friends after I have been... plus the food is phenomenal.

And our most important question...how do you like your steak?!
I like it medium rare and delicious. Maybe with a side of peppercorn sauce if I fancy treating myself.
