ARTIST OF THE MONTH: Sonya

Back to blog

Hi Sonya! What inspires your work as an artist?
Being an artist is a necessity for me. It is the way I process life and my experience of it.  I use these thoughts and feelings as a conduit for my creative expression and without doing this would probably go mad!  Art is my home, my place of sanctuary, my therapy and the place where my Soul can talk to its maker…by making art I hope that I can bring joy and revelation to those around me...

What medium do you like working with best, and why?
Even when I paint I have an urge and need to create in 3D. This is why my discipline is in making ceramics - the fact that you can literally create a form which you can hold in the palms of you hands when a moment ago it didn’t even exist!  This is exciting!  My paintings are now developing into 3D canvas paintings using textured paste and acrylic layering to bring out this quality in what otherwise would be a 2D experience…it’s all very dynamic and tactile!

How long have you been an artist for?
Ha Ha! I am currently involved in an online article with 31 other artists looking at answering the question ‘what does it mean to be an artist’.  We all have realised over the month (where our discussions have been shared) that we have been artists from the moment we were born…but to answer this another way.  When did I feel able to call myself an artist and ‘own’ the title…probably since 2014.

What do you like best about having your work with us at SOTA?
I love the fact that two indulgent and expressive acts come together in one place…namely eating and art!  People are able to feast their eyes on wonderful food and wonderful art.  What could be better!  Of course it also helps that Hannah-Jayne is a pleasure to work with… wink

And our most important question...how do you like your steak?!
Medium to rare please! Succulent and juicy…
