Artist of the Month: Square Eyes (Becky Arnold)

Back to blog

Hi Becky, AKA 'Square Eyes'! What inspires your work as an artist?

I have been using my photography as a way of documenting my life and travels as a visual journey for years. Using social media I have grown an interested following and over time I have documented in great detail places I have lived, architecture, cityscapes, streets, landscapes, nature, seascapes, flora, travel and anything else that crosses my path as I travel along it.

I then began to print key moments/memories in a Polaroid size and style format and started to build thematically related square format collections in multiples of 1, 4, 9 and upward. This process allowed the work to be customised to a location, theme, person or category.

Nearly all my collections are one of a kind.

What medium do you like working with best, and why?

I have worked with and studied a wide range of arts and media. For me, while I do enjoy painting and drawing, photography has always had a very special place in my heart. I love the amount of information and detail that can be captured in a moment. Particularly because of the way I work, it best facilitates the instant moment captured as part of my day to day life and travels.

How long have you been an artist for?

I started studying art and photography at school and then continued my photographic study throughout college and university. In the last 5 years I have begun to develop the particular style that I work in today.

What do you like best about having your work with us at SOTA?

It’s a very relaxed atmosphere. Often galleries or exhibition space can be quite open and quiet, which is a wonderful setting for your work, but it is also nice to see your work in a more lively environment surrounded by people enjoying the space in a different way.

And our most important question...how do you like your steak?!

Excellent question! Medium rare! And square!
